In generic MIDI mode (not using Automap), all the hardware controls have fixed preset MIDI‑message assignments, so you can only change MIDI channel and transpose the keyboard into different registers. Bi-directional communication via the USB link then keeps the screen and controller in sync, so parameters adjusted at either end are always correctly displayed. Automap is able to automatically extract all the controllable parameters in a plug-in and map them to an appropriate hardware control, saving the user the tedious process of having to individually assign them.

NocturnalĪs with other Novation controllers, the Nocturn will operate both as a generic MIDI device and in conjunction with the company's nifty Automap software control system.
The hardware is powered via USB connection with a computer, and can't operate stand‑alone as it has no MIDI sockets of its own - the only other sockets are for optional volume and expression pedals. A 49‑note keyboard version is also available. The illuminated buttons and touch‑sensitive knobs were first seen on Novation's original Nocturn controller (reviewed back in the August 2008 issue of SOS) and facilitate easy hands-on control of software parameters.

Conventional pitch and mod wheels, and eight velocity‑sensitive rubber pads for programming drums or triggering samples, complete the facilities line-up. The Nocturn 25 is a new MIDI controller combining a velocity‑ and aftertouch‑sensitive 25‑note Fatar keyboard with a set of buttons and knobs for controlling soft synths and plug-ins. As a bonus at this price point, aftertouch is included and the keyboard can be zoned into up to four areas.įlipping to the rear, you'll find connections for MIDI in and out, a USB connector, which is used to send and receive MIDI, plus expression and sustain pedal sockets.After an extensive programme of selective breeding Novation have created the Nocturn 25 - an affordable and touch‑sensitive controller keyboard.
Visual feedback on the unit comes from the blue backlit screen that constantly updates to reflect controller assignments or what parameters are being tweaked. Arping onįeature-wise, there's a handy six-mode arpeggiator on board that syncs to the host DAWs tempo. The pads can be used to omit or add notes into an arpeggiated sequence, plus there's a roll function much like note repeat on an Akai MPC. With 25 and 49 note keyboards, Nocturns controller layout has been adapted to a control solution for DAW users. This is a neat addition as it's not always straightforward to add an arpeggiator to a DAW. The Ableton 'clip' trigger mode is also a godsend for those using Live, negates the need for a separate Ableton controller and the pads change colour to reflect Ableton's various trigger modes. Ableton Live Lite 8 is also bundled with the Impulse.

The Automap 4 software is easy to install and the dials mapped instantly to Logic's native plug-ins straight out of the box, though the mixer/pans didn't instantly work with the faders (on Logic 9.1.5) and we had to assign them manually, though this is simple enough - click on a parameter and turn any dial. We couldn't find a template for Logic, but there are templates for Live, GarageBand, Kontakt and Mainstage. It's easy to flip between plug-ins, your DAW's mixer or general MIDI control duties once set up.
